SCALING UP

This is referred to as one of the Challenges by a lot of organizations. In fact, those who do not talk about it also deal with it all the time. Scaling up really means Growing. And today’s growth is tomorrow’s sustainability. Hence, it is an imperative action. Families also need to grow. In case they don’t, the members of the family also disintegrate or do not bond as well as they would like to. This is despite the fact that family members have bond written in blood! Growth with the times is really no choice. To adopt this change willingly leads to real internal growth and success. In the organizational parlance, the term scaleability is used to refer to the ability of the organization to constantly scale up with the changing needs of time, people and goals. Most of the organizations that face any kind of difficulty in creating their ability to scale up should look at the following:
 
1. Insecurities in people: People in the decision making roles may feel insecure about delegating the decision making to their people. This insecurity will mostly be the result of their past experiences with their seniors, juniors or other people. It has been found that the adverse results of any previous initiative basically resulted because a proper process of delegation and empowerment was not followed.
 
2. Building Delegation and Empowerment Attitudes: These attitudes need to be developed in those senior people who are responsible for empowering others. Mere good behaviour and motivational talks do not give the desired results.
 
3. Inclusive Process Engineering: One of the basic ingredients in the ability to scale up is those processes which help an organization run its business effectively. These processes need to be dynamic with the changing needs yet need to be simplistic to be understood and implemented by all those who join in later. All key members of the organization need to participate in setting up of these processes for them to be implemented. One of the mistakes committed by an organization is to install those processes that are “advised” by outside consultants. Now, such processes will indeed by “bast practices” yet it is more suitable for an organization to have a systematic development of its processes which are contributed to by its people at most stages and which they can feel “belongs” to them. A correct combination of “best practices” along with “belongingness” factor from all key members will make effective processes a possibility.
 
4. Constant Succession Planning: Unless succession planning is a norm in the organization, its people will not be able to visualize their “personal growth” which will force them to look outside the organization. It is only when the organization provides personal growth to its people that the organizational growth begins to happen.
 
5. Clear Goals: Unless the organization follows a policy of clear goals and its people set their personal goals which are aligned with the goals of the organization, the scaling up will continue to hit obstacles. Setting Strategic Goals which are followed by the Goals setting process at all levels of the organization ensures effectiveness at all levels. It is only through a sustained process that people develop themselves to be have the confidence in ensuring growth. When this confidence is established, scaling up for an organization becomes a way of life. Remember, Growth is a conscious choice in the desired direction! Growth in any other manner will make you more Insecure!
